Welcome to the 7th World Games 2005 Duisburg!
The 7th World Games will be held in the German city of Duisburg and its partner cities Bottrop, Oberhausen and Mülheim an der Ruhr from 14th July till 24th July 2005. The 7th World Games 2005 Duisburg will be the meeting place for 3500 athletes representing 40 sports, 177 disciplines and 100 different nations. The Games are expected to attract approximately 500,000 spectators.
Orienteering is one of the 32 official sports included in the programme of The 7th World Games 2005 Duisburg. The orienteering events will be organised at Bottrop. The German Orienteering Federation and the orienteering club DJK Adler 07 Bottrop have been entrusted with the organisation of the orienteering events and are pleased to welcome the world elite orienteers to this major event.
1. Programme
The 7th World Games 2005 Duisburg will get under way with the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, 14th July 2005.
The orienteering events will be held according to the below schedule:

2. Competition rules
The World Games orienteering events will be organized in accordance with the Competition Rules for IOF Foot Orienteering Events, valid as of 1st January 2004.
The IOF has approved the organiserÂ’s request for rule deviations as follows:
Individual Event (Saturday 16th July 2005) middle distance race for men and women: 1 minute start interval.
Relay Event (Sunday 17th July 2005) mixed relay for 2 men and 2 women: Map scale of 1:5000 or 1:4000 using ISSOM standard (sprint map).
3. Classes and participation
The International World Games Association (IWGA) has decided to include three orienteering competitions in the programme of The 7th World Games 2005 Duisburg. The programme includes an individual middle distance event for both men and women, and a mixed team relay. The IOF is entitled to enter 80 athletes, i.e. 40 men and 40 women.
On the basis of the selection criteria, 18 nations have qualified for participation in the competitions, namely: Australia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine. The reigning world champions Simone Niggli-Luder (SUI), Karolina A. Hojsgaard (SWE), Niclas Jonasson (SWE) and Thierry Gueorgiou (FRA) have got a personal place.
The national orienteering federations have accepted the number of athletes allotted to them in accordance with the agreed qualification criteria, and entered extra officials as shown below.

Thirteen of the above listed nations have qualified for participation in the mixed team relay for teams of 2 men and 2 women, i.e. Australia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
4. Entry permits (Visas)
Visitors from some of the participating countries will need to apply for a visa. For information on the entry regulations, visit http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/www.en/willkommen/einreisebestimmungen/liste:html.
It may take time to get the visa. Therefore, it is recommendable to submit the entry form as soon as possible. Once the filled-in entry form for any participant who requires a visa has been received, the DOC will send a personal invitation to the participant's postal address (please include complete postal address in the entry form!). Having received the invitation from the DOC, the participant should immediately apply for the visa.
5. Accreditation procedure
The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) is required to bundle and forward to the DOC all the entry forms for the participants (athletes and team officials). Deadline for submitting the filled-in entry forms to the IOF is 2nd May 2005.
Only the attached official entry form provided by the DOC may be used. Where possible, the applications should be filled in and submitted to the IOF in electronic form. Please don't forget to include a photo!
Having received the entry form, the DOC will issue the Identity and Accreditation Card (ID Card) which is non-transferable and has to be collected in person by each individual upon arrival.
6. Arrival
The participating national orienteering federations shall bear the costs of traveling to and from the World Games.
The DOC will organise transport from Düsseldorf airport and from Duisburg central railway station to the central accreditation office at the "Sportschule" of the Football Federation of the Lower Rhineland at Sportpark Wedau in Duisburg. In order for the DOC to make the transport arrangements, please indicate the planned time of arrival in the entry form.
The DOC will arrange for the participants to be taken from the central accreditation office to their respective accommodation.
Participants arriving by bus or by private cars should follow the World Games signs to the Sportpark Wedau. There they are asked to register at the central accreditation office at the "Sportschule" of the Football Federation of the Lower Rhineland.
7. Opening ceremony
The athletes and the team officials are expected to arrive on Thursday 14th July, and to take part in the opening ceremony in the MSV-Arena. The DOC will arrange the transport to and from the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony will start at 8.15 p.m. The athletes and officials will parade by country, under their national flags.
8. Transportation
The participants will be taken to and from the training and competition venues, the central catering unit in the Sportpark Wedau and the World Games Plaza by bus. The shuttle bus timetable will be handed out to the participants upon arrival.
The ID Card entitles all participants to free access to "VRR" public transport means in the organizing cities.
It is compulsory for the competitors and the registered team officials to use the official transport to and from the competitions and to and from the model event.
9. Accommodation
The orienteers will be accommodated at the Hotel Residenz in Oberhausen. The co-ordinates of the hotel are: Hotel Residenz Oberhausen; Hermann-Albertz-Str. 69; 46045 Oberhausen; phone: +49-208-8208-0; fax: +40-208-8208-150; http://www.hotel-residenz-oberhausen.de/ .
In accordance with the provisions of the IF Passport, the accommodation including breakfast is free of charge for the athletes. All additional costs like telephone, pay-TV, mini bar or laundry service have to be covered by the athletes themselves.
NOTE! The accommodation is in twin-bedded rooms. Subject to availability, single rooms may be booked at an extra charge of 45 EUR/person/night. Together with the entry forms, please fill in and submit to the IOF the attached rooming list, as the IOF is required by the DOC to allocate the rooms to the participants.
10. Catering
Breakfast will be served at the hotel. Lunch will be handed out as lunch packet or will be served at World Games Plaza, Duisburg (between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.). Dinner will be served at World Games Plaza, Duisburg (between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.).
The athletes are entitled to receive a free lunch or dinner on the day of arrival and a free breakfast (in the hotel) on the day of departure.
11. Team officials
The team officials entered by the national orienteering federations may accompany their competitors but a fee of 95 EUR/day, i.e. a total of 380 EUR for the period 14th to 18th July is charged for their accommodation, meals and transport.
NOTE! The accommodation is in twin-bedded rooms. Subject to availability, single rooms may be booked at an extra charge of 45 EUR/person/night. Please include the team officials in the attached rooming list!
Invoices for the accommodation will be issued and circulated to the participating member federations once the rooming list has been received, and the DOC has confirmed availability of any booked single rooms.
12. Insurance
Please note that the competitors participate at their own risk. The World Games organiser is not responsible for insurance against accidents, but this is the responsibility of the respective national federation or the competitors themselves, according to national regulations.
In accordance with the IWGA rules and regulations, the participants have to show a proof of their health insurance cover. Without that proof, accreditation is not possible. A health insurance is also necessary to get a visa for entry into the Federal Republic of Germany.
Participants without the required health insurance will be given the opportunity to effect an insurance on site for the duration of the 2005 World Games.
13. Embargoed Areas
The
below area in Bottrop, Germany, is embargoed until the end of the World Games
2005:
A colour copy of the maps Köllnischer Wald, orienteering map 1:10000 (1999) and Revierpark Vonderort, orienteering map 1:7500 (2003) has been sent by ordinary mail to each of the participating federations.
14. Terrain description
Individual middle distance race: The competition terrain is a mixture of park and wooden land. Small height differences (50-75 m above sea level). Runnability varies very much. Old beech trees in some parts of the area; in other parts undergrowth of fern and stinging nettles with some more open areas with oak, maple and alder. Lots of embankments and ditches. Rich network of tracks.
Mixed team relay: Park land and urban area.

The maps are drawn according to the International Specification for Orienteering Maps (ISOM 2000) and the International Specification for Sprint Orienteering Maps (ISSOM). The final draft 2004 is published on the website http://lazarus.elte.hu/mc/issom/index.html

17. Punching and time-keeping system
The Sport-Ident electronic punching system and time-keeping system will be used. SI chips will be provided.
18. Start draw
The start draw for the individual middle distance competition on Saturday 16th July will be on Friday 15th July at 4 p.m.
19. Team officialsÂ’ meetings
The team officials’ meetings will be held at Hotel Residenz, Oberhausen according to the below schedule: for individual races on Friday 5 p.m. - 6 p.m., for relay on Saturday 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
20. Prize-giving ceremonies
World Games medals will be awarded to the three best individuals and/or teams in each competition. The prize-giving ceremonies will take place immediately after the competitions at the Jahnstadion, Bottrop. A winnersÂ’ ceremony for all World Games winners of the day will be held at World Games Plaza, Duisburg in the evenings.
21. Medical services
The Medical Centre will be established in the Karl-Lehr-Realschule, Duisburg. The Medical Centre will be located close to the Doping Control Centre. Official compulsory transport to and from the doping control centre will be provided for doping test candidates. Physiotherapist services will be provided free of charge at the Jahnstadion before/after the competitions and in the hotel in the afternoon/evenings.
22. Anti-Doping controls
According to the IWGA Rules, the responsibility for Anti-Doping controls during the World Games lies with the IWGA Medical Commission. The World Games 2005 GmbH as the hosting organization is responsible for the implementation of the doping tests. The central Doping Control Centre will be at the Karl-Lehr-Realschule. The samples will be analyzed by the WADA-accredited laboratory of the Biochemical Institute of the Cologne Sports University.
By submitting
their entries, the participants agree to abide with the provisions of the IWGA
Anti Doping Rules (please consult:

Upon receipt of the ID Card,
the participants will have to sign a document to personally acknowledge and
agree with the corresponding rules and regulations. Doping controls may be
effected from the date of accreditation.
The TUE procedure is in accordance with the international standard as set forth by WADA.
Any medal winner failing to pass a doping control test shall forfeit his or her medal. The Executive Committee of the IWGA will take the relevant decision. Further disciplinary actions are the responsibility of the IOF.
23. Clothing restrictions
No full length spike shoes are allowed. Shoes with metal studs encased in rubber or similar material (so-called dubbed spikes) may be worn. Otherwise there are no particular restrictions. Full body cover is recommended because of nettles and blackberries. Your attention is also drawn to the occurrence of ticks.
24. Advertising on sportswear and equipment
Advertising on sportswear and equipment is permitted in principle, as long as it is not in conflict with the interests of the DOC's sponsors. The national federations are required to inform the DOC in advance about any sponsor logos on the running suits and other sportswear worn by their participants. The form to be used for this purpose is attached. Please give a brief description of the logos and attach a photo/copy of each of them. This form shall be submitted to the IOF Secretariat together with the entry forms. The DOC will check the details and will reply within six weeks after receiving the information.
25. Weather and climate
In July it is summer in Germany. The day temperature varies from 16 to 30 degrees Celsius, night temperature normally above 10 degrees. Long periods of dry weather are possible, and so are heavy rain and thunderstorms.
26. Training opportunities
On Friday 15th July 2005, a model event will be organised in terrain similar to the competition terrain.
27. Media services
The main media centre will be located in the MSV-Arena in Duisburg. At other venues smaller sub-centres will be available for the media representatives.
Media representatives are requested to submit their accreditation by 19th May 2005.
